So, I have something that’s been on my mind for quite some time now, and it goes in line with my rant concerning the use of POCs. I was an rp helper for about five months, then I quit. I still consider myself to be in the know when it comes to rp community.
I will admit, this might be a little harsh. I have this on my mind for so long though, and the only way I think that this community can grow will be to recognize our flaws and work on them. Everything I’m about to say is not directed at any one person in particular.
You will always have opposition, and no matter what you do, someone is not going to agree with you. The rp community loves fcs, then hates them. It attacks people for only wanting ships, then calls for letting people rp what they want. It’s so wishy-washy that it’s hard to navigate. But there is one thing that I have noticed that is absolutely killing group rps. And in my opinion, it’s starting with the people declaring themselves as helpers.
I have run large rps for a long time now, and I am very much tired of the rp world when it comes to group rps. Some people say that group rps are dying, and I finally feel like I can tell you why. It seems that the majority of this community is flaky. People expect to be handed everything just because they want it, then they drop it within days. They find what they don’t like, then they go make their own rps. There is no dedication anymore.
If you think about it, the reason most rps fail is often because admins and players aren’t dedicated. Admins make an rp, put a lot of work into its creation, and then they dip out. Players pick up characters, often characters that have either a Teen Wolf or Vampire Diaries fc, and then they drop after a week. Anyone else notice this?
I don’t know about you guys, but I’m sick of it. One hundred percent sick of it. I don’t want to rp with people who can’t be as dedicated as I am. It makes me wonder why they even rp at all. As an admin myself, I hate those players. I know when it’s coming. It wrecks my muses when I’m surrounded by players who don’t care.
So now I wonder, what is the point? I group rp because I love writing with new people in a grand story. I love making new friends. I met some of the best people of my life in group rps, and I’ve grown so much as a writer.
I’m a dedicated admin. I wouldn’t have rps that have lasted multiple years on both forums and tumblr if I weren’t. I don’t want the practice to die.
I bring up helpers because they are the worst culprits all around. I can’t tell you how many people have told me about people they thought would be amazing turned out to flake within days or weeks of joining. What’s worse, they flake out without a word. No explanation, just gone. These same people preach about player etiquette. It’s a bunch of hypocrisy, and I know us “serious” rpers are sick of it.
What salts the wound is that you read about these helpers not having time for your rp, then off to start their own. Often they have like, four or five they’re working on. It’s as if people can’t finish ideas and let them grow. That’s the most incredibly insulting thing to an admin, especially when someone’s left without a single word.
So instead of starting new rp and looking power crazy, I really wish people would show dedication to groups. We used to be like family, and now it’s hard as hell to get players who are dedicated to the story.
So ask yourself, why do you rp? Why did you join? Don’t join an rp unless you plan to stay and invest yourself into it. The end.
